DEPARTMENT OF JAIN DARSHAN (CORE SUBJECT)

Jain Philosophy is one of the most oldest and important thinking traditions of India. It has its own realistic approach about the things and ideas. It deals with reality, cosmology, epistemology and Vitalism. From the Vedic period two different current of thought and ways of life are known as (a) Sramana and (b) Brahman. That is why from ancient times we have the Sramana literature that has made manifold contributions to Indian culture through its unique tradition of the religion of non- violence, non- possessiveness, the philosophy of multiple facets of reality and trust and unbroken line of numerous great works in Prakrit and Sanskrit languages. With the view of the above facts the teaching, study, research and understanding of the Jain religion and philosophy a department of Jain Darshan (Jain Philosophy) was started in the year 1978 in Shri Digamber Jain Acharya Sanskrit College, Jaipur. DEPARTMENT OF VYAKARAN

The tradition of Sanskrit grammar dates back to the Vedic period. There have been many refinements in the Structure of grammar, the best refinement of which was done by Maharishi Panini. By the grace of Lord Shiva, after receiving the fourteen Maheshwar Sutras, Maharishi Panini, about 2700 years ago, made such a structure of four thousand sutras that he made the entire Sanskrit Vanmaya his subject. The sutras written by Maharishi Panini are so pure and scientific that today continuous research work is being done on them, but not even the slightest error is seen anywhere. After this, Maharishi Katyayan further strengthened Panini grammar by creating about 2000 Vartikas. After him, there was Maharishi Patanjali who wrote such a gloss on the sutras of Panini and the words of Katyayana that such a gloss has never been written on any book till date, hence this gloss (bhashya) was known as Mahabhashya, Mahabhashya is the criterion of grammar. In Mahabhashya, Panini’s own theory has been presented by explaining the overall thinking of Katyayana.

Many scholars became scholars in the tradition of grammar after studying Mahabhashya and have written many Books. Shri Bhatto ji Dixit has written books like Vyakaranasiddhantakaumudi, Praudhmanorama, Shabdakaustubh etc: Shri Nagesh bhatta has written many books like Laghushabdendushekhar, Brihchchabdendushekhar, Paribhashendushekhar, Vyayakaran Siddhantlaghumanjaushaa etc. Similarly, Jayaditya Vaman wrote the book Kashika. Kauvabhatta wrote Bhushansaar.Bhartrihari wrote the book Vakyapadiyam. Vyadi wrote a collection of books. Kait wrote Pradeep Tika. In this way, the tradition of grammar became very rich and from the time of Panini till today, the study and teaching of grammar is going on continuously for the all-round development and preservation of Sanskrit. Grammar is being studied an taught in many universities, colleges and schools in India and the world. Since Shri Digambar Jain Acharya Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya was established in 1885, teaching of various subjects was being done here. But the grammar department was not started here and there was a lack of it. Because the use of grammar is necessary for all subject The main goal of grammar is knowledge of vocabulary. Knowledge of vocabulary will lead to knowledge of language.

On through knowledge of the language will the common man be able to get information about the elements contained in Sanskrit. Therefore, after getting affiliation from Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi, the subject of grammar got recognition Due to which the Vyakaran Department was started from the session 2022-23. In the session 2022-23, grammar students took admission and at present a total of 21 girl students are studying in the department. Dr. Krishna dev Shukl is working as the first head of the Vyakaran department.

Prakrit language has been a link between old Indo-Āryan and middle Indo-Āryan languages. Lord Mahavir’s preaching was orally complied by his disciples i.e Ganadharas and Srut- kevalis into many texts. These are written in the Prakrit language. In fact, the cultural heritage of India has been preserved in the literature and inscriptions of Prakrit language. The zeal to learn Prakrit and further critical study of Prakrit texts has increased in some Institutions and universities of India during last few years. Therefore to preserve this ancient language from getting obsolete and for reading of several texts of Jainagam the Department Of Prakrit Jainagam was established in the year 1978 in SDJASM.
